Manu “The Freak Show” Grewal – Doctorate/Sponsored Athlete/ Fitness Model Interview

How did you get started in bodybuilding?

Stress from school! Truth. It wasn’t Arnold, Lee Haney, Superman, Captain America, etc.. I was in undergrad and was stressed thinking about my grades and getting into grad school. A buddy of mine mentioned lifting weights but doing it on the regular. I went once, loved it, and was hooked the very first time. Didn’t know much about training and diet so began to read everything I could get my hands on. I studied everything from books, to mags, to dvds, websites, etc.. I incorporate a little of everything into my training as my goal is just to be “complete”.

I made many mistakes along the way but also learned a great deal about myself. It has made me a better person not just on the outside but more importantly on the inside. I really feel like there is nothing that I cant accomplish.

What is your favorite body part to train?

Love training my back! Just requires a brutal amount of work and intensity – at least the way I do it. A close second would be legs.

Can you give us a sample of your routine?

Currently, I train chest/hammies/triceps once a week and the remaining bodyparts twice per week. Just work best for me. I train very blue collar, high volume, and give my all every time I step foot in the gym.

I also do a lot of conditioning work such as run stairs, sprint, play football, bike, swim, etc..

My goal is to not just develop my physique but have the strength and stamina to go along with it. People said I would just spin my wheels training that way. I beg to differ. I don’t follow status quo. Never have. Never will.

As far as actual routine, I have a running log on my sponsor’s website A1 supplements and have had three successful training logs on bb.com (all were #1 rated). So exercises and diet can be referenced there.

Im about to drop a new log come June 1! So hang tight! The entire game will change with this one.

What kind of music do you listen to when you are working
out?

Im a music fiend. A sneaker fiend too…lol. Did I mention hat fiend as well?

I listen to all genres of music– house, techno, rap, alternative, rock, metal, etc..

We all have at least one, what is the most embarrassing song on your iPod?

Oh man..lol. I have Madonna’s “Frozen” on my IPOD! Hahah! For some reason I like the humming in the song.

What does your diet look like when you are trying to get
lean?

I really don’t change my diet much when cutting as far as actual foods. Just reduce my portions. I love my chocolate milk, bacon, ice cream, etc…Cant touch ‘em! So don’t even try it! Lol.

What kind of cardio do you like best?

Sprinting and running stairs! Love to play football too – tackle, no pads, and bring peoples heads back on a platter. I mean that in a nice way.

If you could give somebody only one fitness tip what would it be?

Time, patience, and consistency are of utmost importance! Can’t stress that enough. People are too impatient. This is a sport/game for life.

As an example, I can count one one hand in the past 8 years how many training sessions I have actually missed. I like that dedication. It’s all about consistency.

I expect results and do put an enormous amount of pressure on myself to succeed at whatever I do.

Tell us about your biggest bodybuilding influence?

I really enjoy the 70s era of bodybuilding. Those were basically perfect physiques in my eyes. Sergio Oliva is someone I look up to a great deal. I do my best to my model my physique after his.

Favorite cheat food?

What’s that??!!?!?!? Lol.

In terms of mainstream, I suppose I cheat everyday with some of the foods I eat (mentioned earlier). To me it’s all about
calories in vs. calories out with majority of your diet being derived from wholesome/nutritious foods.

Just to play along though with the “cheat food”, I would say cheesecake.

What does the future hold for you?

Just continue to train as hard as I possibly can, be a respectable individual, continue to gain knowledge and achieve goals, stay with my sponsors, continue to do shoots, interviews, continue to get published in mags, etc.. I thank everyone who has supported me through the years – my family, friends, sponsors, BTK (yeah buddaaaaay!), etc.. It means a lot to me to have their support.

At the end of the day, I always say it’s You vs. You. It’s up to you to be what you want to be and what you want to achieve. No excuses. People with excuses are simply weak. They should just stop now. No other way of stating it. They are usually in the form of people who enjoy and/or like to hate on others due to their own shortcomings. Most of the time it is just a self-weakness. Weak not just physically but more importantly mentally.

I’d rather be the one being hated on that the one doing the hating. In the end you kind of want to be hated on…just means you are doing something right. GAME OVER.

I always compete against myself and never ever compare myself to others. As I mentioned earlier, I like to use training as a tool to become better not only on the outside but also on the inside.

You have to find what works best for you and stick with it. It’s all about busting your ass and being the best you can be.

Train hard.
